Most Energy-Efficient AC Units

If you plan to purchase an AC unit, one of the top things that should influence your choice is energy efficiency. You should always go for the most efficient air conditioner within your budget. It’s also okay to spend a little more to purchase the most energy-efficient unit if a little outside your budget. This is because the saving you will make in terms of energy cost throughout the life of the AC unit will surpass the premium you paid for the increased energy efficiency by far.

Which AC Unit Is the Most Energy-Efficient?

You can figure out the energy efficiency of any AC unit by checking its SEER rating. An air conditioner’s SEER rating is determined based on its indoor cooling ability divided by how many watts per hour it uses to maintain the set temperature. The SEER rating is denoted in numbers starting from one. Older air conditioners (from about 10 to 20 years ago) usually have a SEER rating below 10. Today, most AC units have a SEER rating of 13 to 14, while class-leading options in energy efficiency have a SEER rating of 18 and above. These class-leading options are known as high-efficiency air conditioners. At the moment, the most efficient air conditioner you can buy is the Lennox XC25, with a SEER rating of 26.

Top AC Units for Energy Efficiency

  • Best Overall: Lennox XC25

The Lennox XC25 is a market-leading ultra-efficient air conditioner that achieves a SEER rating of 26 by leveraging breakthrough technology. This variable-capacity air conditioner allows for precise speed control in 1% increments, unlike many other units, which usually have two-stage speed controls: high and low.

  • Runner Up: Amana AVXC20

This AC has a SEER rating of 24.5, and it utilizes specialized inverter technology that allows speed and power levels to be adjusted automatically to match the set thermostat temperatures. Thus, the compressor never works harder than it needs to.

  • Lennox XC21

The Lennox XC21 has a SEER rating of 21.2, and it’s a two-stage air conditioner that’s considered the "budget’ alternative to the Lennox XC25. Keep in mind Lennox offerings are usually costlier than comparable AC units. This AC unit is designed for use in super hot climates where precise speed control isn’t necessary.

  • Carrier Infinity 21 and Bryant Evolution 180B

These two AC units have a SEER rating of 21, and both rely on two-stage controls. Both AC units have a proven record of dependability, and the two-stage controls make them easy to repair.

  • Coleman AC21B, Fraser-Johnson AL21B, York YXV, Luxaire AL21B

These air conditioners also have a SEER rating of 21, but they lose out on the number #4 position because they are rated lower on the Department of Energy’s EER rating.
